The Stallion show 2012.

It is on again soon, the hengstenkeuring show (Stallion show) in Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland in the Netherlands. It starts on 1 pm on Thursday 12 January with the  young foalbook stallions that passed the first round of judging back in November being judged. If they pass this judgement they progress to the 3rd round on Friday. If they pass this round they are eligible to go to the Central testing (70 day performance test).  Friday is also the day of the clinics, with some welknown presenters such Adelinde Cornelissen, European dressage champion. A number of meetings will be held such as the WFHO (World Friesian Horse Organisation) and the foreign societies regional meeting as many foreign delegates are usually present at the show.

Friday night is show night. Many of the studbook stallions will present their strengths as well as some other show elements will be incorporated.

On Saturday is the day that the approved stallion are inspected and classified. The judging is done in age groups and each group has a champion. Out of these champions the best performing stallion is awarded overall champion of the stallionshow. When it comes to the last 4, the tension among the 8,500 spectators is electric and when the champion is named, a wall of sound erupts!

While some of our Australian and New Zealand members will attend, the next best option is to follow it live on the internet, by going to the website of the Friesian Regional Broadcasting channel www.omroplive.nl.

ANZFHS display at Equitana

The ANZFHS had a very successful exhibition  at Equitana in Sydney in the breeding village on the Sydney Showground from 10-13 November. The horses, Django, Metsje, Hotse and Cibrichje participated in the daily parades in the Regupol stadium and gave displays in the indoor arena.  People queued to get close to our horses and be photographed with them. We shanded out more than 300 info leaflets and postcards and sold lots of merchandise such as singlets, T-shirts, poloshirts, caps, bags, badges, stickers, mouse mats, fridge magnets and stubby holders.

The ANZFHS thanks the horse owners, grooms and handlers as well as all volunteers that talked to people and explained the virtues of our breed! For more photos and videos, please go to our facebookpage!

The first studbook stallion coming to Australia!

As an exciting first for Australia, KFPS approved Studbook stallion Maiko 373 - Sport (Tsjerk pref sport x Barteld) will stand at Goulburn Valley Equine Hospital from the end of November for the 2011 season. Chilled and frozen semen can be shipped to locations in Australia and New Zealand. This is the first studbook stallion standing in Australia. Currently we have 8 foalbook stallions with a breeding permit in Australia and one in New Zealand and access to studbook stallions was so far only possible by importing frozen semen from the Netherlands. This is often not successfull and therefore costly. Maiko is owned by Alison and Chris Sable. For more information, go to the Sable Ranch website.

Welcome to the website of the Australia and New Zealand Friesian Horse Society (ANZFHS).

The ANZFHS is the official representative of the Royal Society "The Friesian Horse Studbook", Koninklijke Vereniging Het Friese Paarden Stamboek (KFPS), based in the Netherlands. The KFPS is recognised as the World Wide Studbook for the Friesian Horse and is the world-wide authority on the Friesian Horse. The KFPS has organised the national societies in the World Friesian Horse Association (WFHO).

The ANZFHS currently covers Australia and also New Zealand and was established in 1983, celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2009. The first Friesian Horse arrived in Australia in 1977 (the stallion Lyckle "B").

We invite you to explore the world of the Friesian horse if you are new to the breed. If you are already familiar with the breed, or are a member of the ANZFHS and if you are lucky to own a Friesian Horse, this site will provide you with news, information, photos and items such as the information pack and rules and constitution that can be downloaded for your use. Most forms for membership, registration and transfer are also downloadable from the site.

You might be on the verge of joining the small but growing group of Friesian Horse Owners in Australia and New Zealand. Our website will provide you with information about the rules and regulations and provide you with the procedures how to join as a member, transfer horse ownership or register a horse in the books.

Friesian Horses number now close to 500 and are located throughout Australia and New Zealand. The ANZFHS can provide details of breeders and owners in your area. Every 2 years, the ANZFHS organises a "keuring" tour (inspection and classification). The inspections are done by a jury from the mother studbook the KFPS. The last one was held in march/april 2011.

Friesians are becoming quite successfull in the dressage arena. Two Australian stallions, Abe and Django of Cacharell are eligible to compete at Grand Prix Level, while a number of others compete at various levels.

A judging guide to Friesians is available from our downloads page.

The ANZFHS registers only Purebred Friesian horses of which the parentage can be determined. The ANZFHS offers assistance with the purchasing and breeding of Friesian Horses.

The breeding of Friesians is strictly controllled and depending on the parentage of a horse they will recorded in a specific book. There are no approved studbook stallions in Australia and New Zealand and we have a number of foalbook stallions with a breeding permit. If in any doubt of the breeding of the horse, please contact the society. You will find information about stallions here.

Members can participate in discussions and proposals in the ANZFHS wiki space and you can follow us on our facebook page.
